Empire Total War Has Stopped Working On Startup

Original title: Programs Compatibility Application Applications App Apps Game Games Legacy Crash Crashes Hang HangsI am experiencing problems while playing the game; Empire:Total War. I have played this game, going through the easy and medium setting, off and on for about 18 months without any problems. Two months ago I started the hard setting and it was goingfine for the first several sessions. All of the sudden about 5-10 minutes into the game the screen would black out and a message would appear saying ' Empire: Total War has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.

Windowswill close the program and notify you if a solution is available.' Needless to say no message has come from windows so I am at a loss as to what the problem is.

On advise of a semi-computer 'expert' I uninstalled Steam and Empire both. I then reinstalledthem and the problem still exists. When I checked the Steam trouble shooter it said that running Steam in Windows compatibility mode is not recommended and that I should remove any windows compatibility settings for all users under file properties for Steam.exe.I am reluctent to try this as I am a computer dummy and do not want to do more harm to the system. If the issue continues, please do reply with Event Logs. We would be happy to help you further.I've been experiencing the exact same problem when playing both Civilization V and Supreme Ruler: Cold War-both on Steam. I had also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the games (and Steam) to no avail.

I've tried all of the troubleshooting steps you'velisted here including trying to play with the computer in a clean boot state and updating to the latest graphics card driver (mine was current), but I'm still experiencing the same crash.I've analyzed the Event Log and identified the entries associated with the crashes. They do not make much sense to me, but I've included the details here.
