It runs El Capitan just fine. But El Capitan puts some guards in the OS that prohibits Apple's own SuperDrive from working, purportedly because the newer drives require more power via USB which older notebooks don't provide. While not recommended - and thus not supported by the OS - my SuperDrive is working just fine with no apparent ill effects on the operation of my MBP in general. There is enough power, albeit perhaps not enough to maintain the safety margins stipulated in the design.I never got the Samsung drive to work.
