After spending time in Africa to escape from the harsh northern winters, these migratory birds come back to the same spot each year to breed.However, they don’t like nesting in trees. They prefer barns or other old buildings, which have nice cozy gaps under roof tiles and eaves.There are different species of Swift and they are often confused with Swallows.
The two types of bird are very similar but are in fact unrelated. Luckily for us, our Swift expert Lynda was able to explain the difference to us. “Swifts can often be confused with Swallows or House Martins, but these birds make mud nests, whereas Common Swifts make nests inside the walls of buildings and not usually visible,” she told Bored Panda.These particular nests, which are visible and not in a wall cavity, do not belong to the Common Swift then, but perhaps either to a family of Swallows or a different species of Swift. We have Purple Martens that nest in the area. They too are a victim of progress, every spring I ask if I can build houses on the dolphins in the marina, the Owner is an asshole; and thinks the birds will poo all over the boats (marten poo, isn't corrosive, like seagull, and doesn't stink like Otter). I've shown him the demographics of that 1 purple marten will eat 600x its body weight a night in mosquitoes and other insects. The own said to me 'we dont have a mosquito problem' right this is a guy that goes to bed at 9pm, before the vampires come out.they are friggin HUGE here. 1 month agoYou don't have a mosquito problem because those lovely birds are around to munch on them. (People who can afford to care like wealthy people or the governments, it's not fair to blame the entire human race).
1 month agoOh I've had swifts nesting outside my home for the past 9 years or so. They are such lovely creatures and I get such joy out of watching the parents feed their young. (Ah the little shrieks of joy when they see their parents) Also, when the babies are peeping out over the edge of the nest they look like little people and then their head follow me when I put the trash out so it can get a bit creepy. Still it is funny watching all 6 of them (4 babies I think and two parents stuff themselves into the nest), they can't all fit so there are often bits of them jutting out. 1 month agoI work at a Marina in West Vancouver BC.
