Installing Windows 8.1 on your Alienware 15 (Early 2015)Hey everyone. This guide is meant to assist you with installing a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 on your Alienware 15 (Early 2015). Why a guide for installing Windows you ask? Because I ran into some serious but avoidable problems, when installing the OS after upgrading to two SSD drives, which in the end cost me lots of nerves and three wasted days of repeatedly Format C:s.Please read thoroughly through this 101 and follow the steps in the right order. I can’t be held responsible if anything goes wrong. Please backup your data and don’t follow these steps unless you need to. For instance if you upgraded the main HDD or you are running into trouble which requires a fresh OS install.Ok so if you are still anxiously waiting for you Alienware there are already two things that you can do in order to prepare the setup.1.
Download the Drivers at Dell.com2. Download the Windows Recovery image with the help of the Microsoft Windows Media Creation Tool1. Downloading the driversVisit the Dell website and go to Support - Drivers. Choose the Alienware 15 as your system and download all the necessary drivers, which are:. Command Center.
Creative Macolm Recon3Di. System BIOS A02. Intel Dynamic Platform & Thermal Framework Driver.
Realtek RTS5227 Card Reader Driver. Dell Touchpad Driver.
Qualcomm Killer Wireless 1525 Driver ( That is if you have the Killer Wireless Card). Qualcomm Killer LAN E2201 Driver. Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver. Dell Backup and Recovery, DBAR ( optional). Kionix Free Fall Sensor Driver.
Intel Graphics DriverAs it seems the Alienware Support Assist has been removed from the Drivers Website. I would advise to not install it anyway, as it gave me serious trouble.However there are some missing drivers, which are not listed on the site (wtf?!). I don’t know why but I found them at Dell Bulgaria.You still need:.
( you might also download a newer version directly from Intel). ( wont work with Win 8.1 but will get rid of one unknown device).
The nvidia driver from the nvidia Website (GTX970M 64 Bit) / or the AMD Driver from AMDs siteDownload all these drivers and store them somewhere safe – USB Stick or something.Important: Extract the Killer Wireless and Killer LAN driver onto a USB stick – you will need it later when installing Win 8.1!2. Creating the bootable Windows USB stickOk the second step is to create a bootable stick which will be your install source for Windows. Dell offers a stick like this as a paid upgrade. Don’t bother to get it though! All they did is creating that same stick that you will be creating in a minute. So it hasn’t got any drivers preloaded and also in my case gave me serious trouble. I bought my AW15 from Dell Germany, where you get this stick for free.

However the stick has a horrible flaw: The ISO it is taken from was created at a time, when the Windows Update had a glitch. So when installing Windows from that very stick and then letting Windows Update do its job the PC will end up in a permanent bootloop WTF!!!?This is not Dells fault though as this was a big issue with the Update 1 for Windows 8.1, that lots of users suffered from. However Dell created (at least the German) boot stick which suffers from that issue.Here is what you do:Either get a 8GB USB stick or an external DVD Burner with a DVD-R. Google “windows media creation tool” and download the respective tool.
Then open it and choose your language, your OS (in your case Windows 8.1) and the architecture (x64). Then either create a stick right away or download the iso and burn it later on a DVD-R. This process may take up to an hour so go get some lunch after you start the process.The preparation is done.Actual setup of Win 8.1The next steps require you to already have received your AW15.First thing before you do anything with it like swapping RAM or the HDD – Boot it up.
See if it’s working. At best download the Heaven Benchmark 4.0 to see if everything works alright. (Fans, CPU, GPU)If you have two drives put the extracted Killer Wireless and Killer LAN drivers onto the second disk. Or put them on a separate USB stick.Important: Before installing Windows you should ask yourself which mode to set the SATA controllers to. By default they are set to “Intel Smart Response”. That is a RAID 0 mode which is meant for an Cache SSD setup. So if you have large HDD as your main drive and a smaller SSD and use it as a caching drive this makes sense.
However if you have an all SSD setup as I do, it doesn’t make any sense. In that case you would want to set the SATA controller in BIOS to AHCI. If you are not sure which on to pickjust leave it the way it is! Be aware your system will not boot if you choose to change the value after installing the OS.
So stick with what you have.Alright. Let’s start installing stuff! Shutdown the computer.
Put in your Windows Bootable Stick / DVD and also the stick with the Killer drivers on and power on the machine. Right when you see the Klipsch logo hit F12 a few times.
Choose your Windows stick as a boot device in the UEFI tab.The Windows Setup will load and you choose Install and Advanced / Custom install. Here it will show you all your disk drives. Choose the appropriate one. If you still have an earlier Windows version on that disk format it. ( Please backup all necessary data before doing so) Before you hit install click on Load Driver. Here choose the Killer drivers.
They are in a subfolder called “Yourdrive: WirelessdriverinfproductionWindows8.1-x64k1525wbx” and “Yourdrive: LANdriverinfproductionWindows8.1-x64e22wbx”Now install Windows. After you did so setup your machine for the first time. The first thing you do after all is done: Create a Restore point! To do so hit Fn + Win + Pause at the same time and click on Security/Safety (don’t know the English name).
There create a Restore Point. So if things go bad you can always go back to zero.Alright now do the following. Install everything necessary in the following order:. Drivers ( except the nvidia one) – Reboot after every driver install. Even if it doesn’t ask for it.
Important: You will have to install the LAN and Wireless driver twice! After the first setup it will just uninstall the drivers you already installed during Windows Setup. Create a 2nd restore point. Windows Updates - reboot and search again until ALL updates are installed!.
Create a 3rd restore point. At last install your Nvidia driver and note that your Notebook might become a tiny bit less responsive. That is a small downside of Nvidia Optimus, but is nothing to worry about.

Notice: If you install the Nvidia driver before the drivers and updates you might get performance issues or crashing 3D applications. (I could reproduce this on every installation of Windows) In that case you would have to uninstall the nvidia driver completely using the Display Driver Uninstaller at Guru3D.com. Avoid that by installing it after all the other driver and updatesOk you’re pretty much finished now. You can use Dell Backup and Restore. However all it does is creating a Recovery partition which is identical to the USB stick you created in Step 2.
If you want to actually create an Image of your system you have to upgrade it to Premium which is not free after 60 days. Again WTF!?I hope this was somewhat understandable. I will add stuff that might still be missing.Cheers and good luck to you guys!
